What matters most to God?
Do you know what matters most to God? If you said “me”, well you’d be wrong. Yes, Jesus died for you (John 3:16) Yes, you were designed for a purpose (Ephesians 2:10). One might surmise that we matter most to God. Yes, He did give His life for us. Well yes and no. Are you ready for this? There couldn’t be anything more important to God than me, is a false assumption. First off Scripture tells us what matters to God most is Himself, in that it is his own glory not mine that matters. Our salvation and forgiveness of sins came as a result of Him taking redemptive action for his own sake.
25“I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins. (Isaiah 43:25).
He blots out our sin not for my sake, but His own sake. The prophet Jeremiah knew it is not us who are the priority, but it is His own sake, when he says, 7“Though our iniquities testify against us, act, O LORD, for your name’s sake; for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against you. (Jeremiah 14:7).
You may ask how can God love us unconditionally, as it sounds like He becomes his own condition? In reality his glory results in a love that shows us how much more he loves us, because without his glory and supremacy there would be nothing greater that can sustain us and give us hope and joy for all eternity. We can’t be that joy factor for ourselves.
Romans 3 describes God as having the greatest love for us by extending His own righteousness and taking guilt and sin. It was done to appease his holy wrath for our sin. So yes you matter to God. Yes you are loved by God. But what matters most is His glory. When Paul writes,
5May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, 6that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 15:5-6).
So this leads us back to our reason and purpose we were created. It is to glorify what matters most to God and that’s his own glory. And this passage also indicates why it is so important for the church to be in unity and taught by objective truth, sharing a common voice and orthodoxy so that the bride can glorify Him.
